Tips for your kids top Performance:
The Art of Being SHARPP

Introduction by Sara Noon with excerpts from Dr. Ginsburg’s book Whose Game is it Anyway?

As we watch our children develop and grow in a sport, whether they are all-star athletes or temporarily sitting on the bench, we want our children to acquire a consistent sense of personal achievement and enjoyment. Nothing is worse than driving an hour to a game listening to anxiety build up in your child, worried that they are not as good as the other kids and not going to play well. I have listened to my children worry about being teased or mocked because of not being as good as some of the other kids. But being “good” is not the point of youth sports, the point is to learn, improve, and most importantly, get exercise and have fun. We, as parents, must give them the help and resources to develop good character habits along with fitness, strength and sport skills. Steve Durant in partnership with Dr. Richard Ginsburg and Amy Baltzel, developed the SHARPP approach:

Play with SPIRIT
Always HUSTLE
Pay ATTENTION
Be RESPECTFUL
Be POSITIVE
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

This article focuses on the art of being SHARPP, a guide to help your child develop in youth sports. Thank you again Richard for supporting US Lacrosse and our parents!

Ask the Expert

by Dr. Ginsburg
Send your question to US Lacrosse

QUESTION: My child loves playing lacrosse, but obsesses with who is playing in what position, and how much play time they are getting versus her. She is only 10. She seems more focused on playing time than learning how to play the game better. How can I help her manage to be less distracted?

ANSWER: Preoccupations in sport may be physical, emotional, social or mental in nature. Physically, a player might be bothered by not having enough to eat prior to competition, being too thin or overweight, or a nagging minor injury.

Testimonial

"My daughter has tired of clinics after 8 yrs but absolutely loved this clinic. The lessons, pace, attitude, were fantastic and she said "I wish this was an all week clinic"! The USA team was so upbeat and helpful they made the girls feel special by learning their names and cheering them on, the number of girls to instructors made it possible for them to give hands on attention and for the advanced girls what they worked on and taught was right on target!"
