A Three Step
Approach to Navigating Youth Sports
Introduction by Sara Noon with excerpts from Dr. Ginsburg’s book Whose Game is it Anyway? Co-authored by Dr. Stephen Durant and Dr. Amy Baltzell.
With four kids, all of whom have played or are playing recreational sports, understanding which sport is best for each child has been like throwing spaghetti at a refrigerator, expose them to everything and see what sticks. Some kids like team sports; some are aggressive and like physical contact. Others kids like individual sports and no contact. While kids work their way through their various sports activities, sometimes they are not so good, but still very proud; and then other times they are good, but not confident, try to be encouraging and supportive, no matter what.
Dr. Ginsburg’s book Whose Game is it Anyway?, probes deeper in to the child psychology of youth sports and how to best navigate the waters with your child. It has been extremely helpful to me and hopefully it will be to you. This article focuses on a three step approach to child development in youth sports. Thank you Richard for supporting US Lacrosse and our parents!

Your Game: Access Denied
by Matt DaSilva
Zac Jungers’ chicken-wing hold (“Ain’t No Thing,” September 2008) was so popular, we decided to publish two more holds that the Denver Outlaws’ defenseman demonstrated for us last summer.
Use these holds to turn away opponents at goal line extended. For d-poles, GLE is the red zone, where the goal line would be if it stretched the width of the field.
If you’ve got a good goalie behind you, he’ll yell “hold” or “drive.” That’s your trigger. Read more >>

Outside-of-School Teams

Send your question to US Lacrosse
QUESTION: I am the parent of 2 sons who play lacrosse and hockey. I so appreciated your article on specialization. The other question I have is whether there is a need for your child to play on a travel team in addition to their school teams if they are excelling in school academically as well as on their high school team.
The travel teams can be very expensive and hard to swing for the family financially and time-wise.
Thanks!
B. Dunn
ANSWER: Outside-of-school teams are raising many challenges for athletes and their families. The cost, time and effort required to participate in these teams while also playing school sports can create chaos for the whole family. As children grow older, these challenges intensify.
