Balancing Character, Skill Development and Fun
Introduction by Sara Noon, Managing Director of Membership at US Lacrosse. Main article by Dr. Richard Ginsburg, Ph.D., Stephen Durant, Ed.D, and Amy Batzell, Ed.D.

As I reflect on character and the role parents play in our child’s athletic endeavors, I think that I have felt every single emotion that Dr. Ginsburg discusses in his article below. I believe that I have gone from "a not so good" sports parent, to a "supportive" sports parent. I wish I had the advantage of Dr. Ginsburg’s book "Who’s Game is it, Anyway" six years ago when my daughter started her club lacrosse career. I learned the hard way how to be a "good" sports parent – by letting go of trying to control my daughter’s abilities. I believed in her so much, that I was one of those parents that "quizzed and critiqued" her in the car following a game. Yuk. The good news is that it did not take too long for me to learn that this approach did not work, that her club lacrosse experience was about her and not about me--I backed off and let go. Six years later, a rising senior, her club lacrosse team just won the National Club Championship.

ASK THE EXPERT
by Dr. Ginsburg

My child works so hard yet the sport comes so much easier to other kids…

QUESTION:
"My child works so hard to become better in the game of lacrosse, lots of training, lots of wall ball, yet the sport comes so much easier to other kids. She loves the game but is it worth sticking with if it comes harder to her than other kids?"

ANSWER:
The answer to this question is complex because important factors need to be considered. What is the age of your child? Does she enjoy playing with her teammates? What are the impressions of her coach? The reality in the athletic experiences of our children is that at some point, they are going to face failure.

Lacrosse Recruits PERFECT THE UNOFFICIAL VISIT!
The unofficial visit has become increasingly important to learn more about a college and their lacrosse program as well as letting a coach know that you are interested in their program. Being on different college campuses allows your child to figure out what they like or dislike in an institution. LacrosseRecruits.com's List of Things to Do; attend classes, go on a tour of campus with a player, go to an Admission's information session, eat a meal in the cafeteria or student center, watch a team practice.

Steve Stenerson Blog Photo World Championship Challenges & Achievements

I've been at the 2010 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Men's World Championship in Manchester for the last couple of weeks. The event includes a record number of competing nations (30) and incorporates the FIL General Assembly of member nations, as well as meetings of the International Development Committee and European Lacrosse Federation. The English Lacrosse Association has done a wonderful job hosting the largest international event in lacrosse history and has set the bar high for US Lacrosse when we host the event at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Denver from July 10-19, 2014.
